The world of work is changing. Jobs of the future in Australia require new skillsets. But what are they, and how do you make sure you’re prepared to grab the opportunities they present?
The World Economic Forum (WEF) has declared that we are entering the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’:
“Developments in genetics, artificial intelligence, robotics, nanotechnology, 3D printing and biotechnology, to name just a few, are all building on and amplifying one another. This will lay the foundation for a revolution more comprehensive and all-encompassing than anything we have ever seen.”
This acceleration of technology is changing the world of work. It has been an emerging trend for some time, but as innovation, investment and capability increase, so too will the rate of ‘revolution’.
This presents both challenges and opportunities to workers. There’s going to be new fields to specialise in. And for those who are ready to learn, adapt to and integrate technology into their work, the future looks bright.
At Charles Sturt University, we’re constantly working to make sure our students learn at the cutting edge of technological change in their chosen profession. Technology and its impact on everything from agricultural supply chains to classroom teaching techniques is now integrated into courses.
Here’s a few new and evolving courses that we have developed to put you at the forefront of technological change. Or even offer a path to a brand-new career.
Bachelor of Sports Media
Combine your passions for sport and communication, and be prepared for the new media landscape.
The public’s desire to watch, listen to and read about sport isn’t going anywhere. This degree will not only give you an edge to your reporting by including sports science subjects, it will also open up to you the possibilities for innovative reporting that technology provides.
You will become adept across all media platforms, from television and digital radio to online content production. Imagine providing live online reporting as events take place. Developing multimedia content to describe new developments in sport. Imagine broadcasting around the world.
Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security
For students who have some proficiency and/or work experience in a suitable field, the Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security could be your entry into a profession that is only going to increase in terms of career opportunities. As more and more business, financial and personal data is developed and stored online, there will be a corresponding rise in the demand for qualified professionals to protect that data.
Cyber security is a global growth industry that currently has a significant shortfall of qualified professionals to meet their needs.
This course is the first of its kind in Australia, providing an integrated approach to respond to the national commitment to becoming a cyber smart country. It focuses on the dark web as well as encryption technologies, how to maintain cloud security and digital forensic tactics. It can also lead to further specialised study.
Communication in the digital age
We’re currently undertaking the most significant overhaul of our communication and creative industries courses in many years.
Charles Sturt University has for a long time been a leader in delivering high-quality education in these fields. One of the reasons for this is that we are always looking to improve our courses, to make them as contemporary as possible so students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in some very dynamic professions.
Just think about the changes that technology has effected over just the last decade or so in television, marketing, film and journalism. This will become more pronounced in the future.
So we’re transforming our courses (both online and on campus at Bathurst, Port Macquarie and Wagga Wagga), positioning them at the cutting edge of creative production in the digital world. It means that when you graduate, you can thrive in the workplace of the future or move into these areas for the first time with confidence.
