Because studying at uni needs the right atmosphere, right? If you’re a foodie (who isn’t?) with an appreciation for breathtaking scenery (aka top shelf Insta inspo), going to university in Orange in New South Wales’ Central West will tick all your boxes for the right city to study in.
Orange is a foodie’s paradise
Picture this: organic food stores, top-shelf wineries and some of the best shopping boutiques outside Sydney. You can almost smell the lifestyle, can’t you? Orange is well-known as a fruit-growing district. Apples, pears, stone fruit – you name it, they grow it in Orange! In recent years, the town has become a popular destination for wine lovers with its vineyards producing distinctive styles of wine.
And then there’s F.O.O.D. Week. Orange F.O.O.D (Food of Orange District) Week is one of Australia’s longest running regional food festivals. The festival started when a group of passionate and committed local foodies joined forces to share the diverse regional produce from Orange, Blayney and Cabonne. Held annually in April, the festival showcases the region’s finest food and wine, food producers, wineries, restaurants, chefs, caterers and cooks.
Perfect balance of country and city life
A stone’s throw from Bathurst and a few hours’ drive to Sydney, Orange is in perfect proximity for that country-city balance. Enjoy the charm of the country during the week, and when you need some down-time from study, you can just jump in the car and head to the big smoke for the weekend. Or stay in Orange. Honest, once you set up digs in this place there’s no need to leave.
With a flourishing cultural scene and beautiful gardens, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Orange itself. And there’s nothing quite like the beauty of an Orange autumn where you can experience all that nature has to offer in the picturesque parks and gardens.
There’s even an ancient volcano – Gaanha Bula (Mount Canobolas) – which provides a dramatic backdrop for the city. Follow one of the walking tracks on the mountain to admire the stunning 360-degree views of the city from the summit. (Or for a bit more speed, check out the Mount Canobolas mountain bike trail.) If you’re hoping to see the glow of hot lava, however, you might be disappointed as the dormant volcano last erupted eleven million years ago. However, the Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area does offer birdwatching, walking, scenic views and a great campground.
Recreation, sports and leisure
There are plenty of activities for you to fill your weekends when you live and study at Orange. Picnic at Lake Canobolas Reserve, visit the Regional Gallery or explore the Heritage Trail. If sport and recreation is up your alley, you can check out the city’s three 18-hole golf courses; lawn bowls greens, rugby league, soccer, rugby union, softball and cricket grounds; indoor sports centre; tennis and squash centres; skate park; ten pin bowling; fitness centres; and gyms and swimming pools.
