How to nail essay writing in university

Feeling a bit stressed about making the step from high school to university study? That’s totally normal. A lot of students worry about the step up to academic reading and writing. We’ve got your back. The Study Skills team at Charles Sturt University will help you navigate your uni assignments like a boss. When it comes to essay writing at university, we’ve got you covered.

At Charles Sturt we want you to get the most out of your degree so it sets you up for a great career when you graduate. That’s why we have support services to give help when you need it.

Getting help with uni assignments

When it comes to assignment help, our Study Skills team is your first port of call when you become a uni student. They are on hand to give you constructive feedback on the structure, style and presentation of your assignments.

While they don’t give detailed advice on the subject matter of your work – that’s up to you! – they can help with the mechanics of academic writing, as Andrew from the team explains.

“You can have your assignment checked by a writing expert before you submit it to be marked. Structure, style, grammar, spelling, punctuation, referencing: you can have a writing expert review all of these facets of your work.

“You submit your assignment, and the expert will identify any aspects of the writing that could be improved. They will pick out one or two examples and suggest areas that require some extra work. They can also point you to resources or workshops that could be of use to you for certain aspects of academic writing.

“It’s not a proofreading service; but it can be very valuable in helping you to hone your assignment – and help you get a higher mark for it.”

And the team aims to get your assignment feedback to you within 24 hours – which can be very handy at the sharp end of a study session.

Here’s what a few of our students who have tried it have said about the service.

“Thank you so much for your feedback. I’ve learned many things, particularly in relation to grammar, as well as the layout of a good introduction. Very quick too.”

“Great support. Great advice. Very happy with the feedback.”

“Thanks; the service was awesome. I like that compliments are included with the critique!”

“This is my very first uni assignment. I am way out of my comfort zone, so thank you for the feedback.”

How to write a uni essay, from start to finish

The Study Skills team also runs a series of workshops throughout academic sessions. Called ‘From Start to Submit’, this five-workshop series covers the following essential skills for creating excellent assignments.

  1. Getting started
  2. Being a researcher
  3. Putting it in your own words
  4. Structuring information
  5. Submit with style

“We also offer workshops on learning strategies, essay writing at university and literacy,” Andrew explains. “These are online interactive courses, with interactivity so you can chat to a coordinator as you need to while you work through the videos and assignments in the module.

“Not only that, once you have accepted an offer to study at Charles Sturt you can also book an appointment with an adviser – either online or face-to-face – who can help diagnose any specific needs when it comes to academic writing or learning. They can help you come up with a tailored plan to tackle any issues, and you can speak to them regularly to address your academic needs.”
