University in Dubbo: why west is best

Considering a tree change to the regions? Well, going to university in Dubbo could be just the ticket.

It’s a place where cattle farms and cafés are within minutes of each other. Where the people are relaxed, friendly and welcoming – and when they ask how you’re going, they really mean it.

So if you’re thinking about studying at Charles Sturt University Dubbo – it’s a smart move.

At Dubbo, we keep things focused. Social work, nursing, teaching: if any of these areas are your passion, Dubbo is the place. At our campus here, we have tight-knit communities of students and academics all working to improve people’s lives. It makes for a pretty dynamic place.

So, while you’re setting yourself up for an epic career – you also get a sweet lifestyle in the regions. You’ll live close to where you work. You won’t have to worry about traffic. And you’ll have time to spend on yourself and with your family. Here in Dubbo, you can truly achieve that work-life-study balance everyone talks about.

On a more practical front, Dubbo is the industrial and commercial heart of the New South Wales (CSW) Central West region. We’re best known for the famous Western Plains Zoo, but the hidden gems of the region include stunning scenery, great wineries and heritage villages, as well as loads of recreational and sporting facilities.

Still deciding if Dubbo is right for you? Read on to find out why you should study in the West.

Cost of living – it’s cheap as chips!

One of the best parts of studying at a regional uni is the cost. Compared to our city cousins, getting an education (and living) in the regions is cheap. Studying with Charles Sturt University at Dubbo means you’ll experience living in a relaxed, regional community – and save a whole lotta money while you’re doing it.

Things that are cheaper in the regions:

  • Uni fees
  • Accommodation
  • Cost of living – groceries, bills, etc.
  • Transport and parking
  • Entertainment

So next time you’re weighing up your options around city versus country study – don’t rule out the county. Your bank account will love you for it.

The zoo – duh.

Sorry guys, we had to! It wouldn’t be a Dubbo wrap-up without a mention of our famous zoo.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo Dubbo is home to over 700 species, including black rhinoceros, Sumatran tigers, elephants and giraffes. The zoo is an immersive animal experience, with the species roaming wide open spaces across 300 hectares of bushland. You’ll barely notice the moats and barriers that keep you separate from the magnificent wildlife as you make your way around the zoo’s 6-km circuit by bike, electric cart, private car or on foot.

To have some of the world’s rarest animals in your backyard is a pretty amazing claim to fame. We think you’ll love it.

Thriving social and foodie scene

When you study with Charles Sturt University Dubbo, you’re in for a good time – whether you live on campus or in the town itself. This especially rings true if you’re a foodie.

Although Dubbo hasn’t been known as a foodie destination historically, the industry is really starting to blossom. Lazy brunches, long lunches and sunset dinners are all part of the experience. Here you’ll find anything from hearty Australian cuisine and national chains to multicultural hidden gems.

The paddock to plate approach is huge in Dubbo – probably because the distance between the paddocks and the plate is basically zero. Sample the fresh produce gathered from around the Macquarie Valley region at the local farmers markets, or enjoy a tipple at a cellar door tasting the region’s warm-climate wines.

And socially – we’ve got it down pat too. There’s plenty of stuff happening on campus (and off) to keep you entertained. Hot tip: the Pastoral Hotel is where it’s at – the beer garden goes off on weekends.
